It was an incredible journey at the Sketchbook Challenge Cebu Ghibli Tribute Exhibit at iioffice Cebu last July 1, 3 & 4, 2017. To be a part of this opportunity to showcase a different art rendition for Ghibli Studio movies was an epic and a milestone as an artist. Since I was started to join an art exhibit, it was a stepping stone to reach out and have this great presence as one of the art exhibitors here in Cebu.

Sketchbook Challenge Cebu is a group of traditional and digital artists living in or from Cebu and art events organization committed to bringing together the aspirant and professional creatives in different type and aspects, from around Cebu province, by facilitating a collaboration, art projects,  art events and opportunities to share creative knowledge and incredible ideas.

The first day of Ghibli Tribute Art Exhibit was a kick start to end-up my excitement to see the different Ghibli inspired artworks. They opened the exhibit around 10:15 A.M. and everyone was really thrilled and excited even if they waited for almost 15 minutes outside the venue.

Along with the exhibit, there was an artist alley which visitors can buy and interact with the artists.

I met Jake Orwell Madera, one of the Ghibli tribute exhibitors, and I saw his incredible masterpiece. He graduated from Cebu Institute of Technology – University with Bachelor Degree of Arts in Graphics and Media. He is into digital paintings and most of his works are into portrait such as characters and famous personalities, or randomly in Expressionist artworks.

He combined the traditional and digital medium for his masterpiece in resin to capture a range of viewers both traditional and digital art enthusiast. His own style in making paint strokes on his artwork was his greatest asset to stand out and create a unique rendition on digital portrait painting/illustration.

His art version of Princess Mononoke was an incredibly transformed into a realistic Amazona or a tribe warrior woman.

On the last day of Ghibli tribute exhibit, I met another artist and he is Van Kevin Opura. He was joining also the Ghibli tribute exhibit and his work was really great.

He said that his work was inspired by the movie, The Adventure of TinTin, which the concept of creativity is into playing skills with specific characters that he wanted to portray or to create by his own rendition. The Ghibli movie, The Secret World of Arrietty, was his assigned artwork for the exhibit and he said that it was easy for him to create the piece because he can easily portray the character by knowing the characters’ story and ability. He loves to create an art in afternoon setting or mode, which he plays with the sunset colors like yellow and orange. He found his passion and interest in life, but he wanted to become a successful graphic design and an artist as well. You can find his recent works at www.facebook.com/vapourlike

And then, this is my Ghibli Tribute art on the exhibit.

I assigned to create an artistic rendition of the Ghibli movie, “From Up On Poppy Hill”. To be honest, I really don’t know about the synopsis of the movie, but I tried to research it and I found it. The film tells the story of Umi Matsuzaki, a high school girl living in a boarding house, Coquelicot Manor. At Isogo High, Umi meets Shun when he participates in a daredevil stunt for the newspaper, leaving Umi with a negative first impression. To know more about their story, you can google it or watch some video clips on YouTube.

My own rendition has I portrayed a good memory or a bright side of them. Then, as my signature art rendition, I put my whole creative ideas and rendition which I play some distortion of the characters and leafy decors which I consistently attached in my artworks since I started AMcore 2016 artworks. You can check my previous works at Behance and search Aldrincore Moshpit.

I’m so thankful for Sketchbook Challenge Cebu especially to Veronika Hippolito from Sun Star Cebu for allowing us to join the Ghibli Tribute Exhibit. Indeed, it was a fulfillment and a successful event that can make me proud of being a Cebuano artist. Hopefully, I can join for another art exhibit.
